Campus Read Essay Contest Scholarship Opportunity


Submit an essay to the Campus Read Essay Contest and you could be looking at a $250 tuition
scholarship for the Fall 2017 semester!                                                                                                  
You're already reading, discussing, and writing about the Campus Read selection, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Take those ideas and turn them into a contest-worthy essay. 


Guidelines
  • Submit your best work of 600 words or more.
  • Your essay topic may be anything related to your consideration of Ernest Cline's Ready Player One
  • Your essay may be a critical response to the book or a narrative essay relating your own experiences that relate to the theme of the book.
  • Don't be afraid to be creative with other ideas.
  • Quoted, paraphrased, or summarized material must be correctly cited (any recognized format is acceptable)
  • Your essay must be typed.
  • Include a cover page with your name, student ID number, address, phone number, and email address.
  • Essays may be submitted electronically as an attachment and emailed to kimberly.crowley@bismarckstate.edu
  • Submission deadline: Friday, April 21, 2017.
  • Essays that do not follow the guidelines will not be considered.
Essays will be judged anonymously by a committee of BSC staff, faculty, and administration members.
 
Prize: A full-time student with the winning essay will be awarded a $250 tuition scholarship from the BSC Foundation for the Fall 2017 semester. Part-time or dual credit students will be awarded up to three credits of scholarship funds.

Eligibility: To be eligible to win, you must be enrolled in BSC in Fall 2017. Students who are enrolled at other colleges but attending classes on the BSC campus are not eligible.

Create a Game Contest - 2017 Campus Read


Objective: Create a game  based on the plot, setting, characters, and central themes of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Prizes: 1st place - $50; 2nd place - $25 Mystic gift card

Game should include
  • Summary of objective of the game that includes a thorough description of the main character(s), major events, title, author, setting, plot, and theme(s) included in the game. Theme may focus on the novel and/or 80s culture in general (examples: 80s music, 80s movies, 80s video games)
  • Clear beginning and end (solution/how the game is won) to the game
  • At least five characters that are creatively and thoughtfully included in the game, including descriptions of each character
  • Rules and directions for playing the game that are thoroughly and creatively written, as well as easily followed. (Include at least 15 questions and answers that relate to the novel)
Evaluation Criteria

Format & Purpose
  • Purpose and format of the game relate directly to the novel
  • Thoroughly and clearly planned
  • All necessary components are included
Design & Creativity
  • Clear representation of the novel’s theme(s)
  • Retells the theme (s) of the novel in a creative, interesting way
Playability
  • Played easily from start to finish – object of the game and how to win clearly stated and easily understood
  • Includes clear and complete directions
  • Questions and rules of play are of an appropriate level – not too difficult and not too easy
Other
  • Must meet minimum requirements to be considered for a prize
  • If game is presented by creator at Campus Crawl, additional points will be awarded
  • If features are included that are in addition to the minimum requirements, additional points will be awarded
Submission & Display
  • Drop off your game at the BSC Library on or before Thursday, April 27, 2017, at 8:45 p.m.
  • Games will be on display in the Library on May 3, 2017, during the Campus Crawl
    • Optional: For additional points, creators encouraged to present their game to observers at the Crawl
After the contest
  • Game creators can pick up their games after the Campus Crawl concludes on May 3, 2017
  • Be prepared to show ID (e.g., BSC student ID, driver’s license) to pick up your game
  • Games that are not picked up by noon on Friday, May 12, 2017, will be discarded
